I sure am glad that I got my copy when it was new and only $16.95.

 

I cannot explain the price except that at almost 500 pages, it is probably the most comprehensive resource your money could buy.  It is without question the "holy grail" of classic video game history for USA releases of console, arcade, and handheld video games. 

The book's price guide and item descriptions cover practically every make, model, and variation.  Plus, there are dozens and dozens of pictures, and website URLs, and book references, and glossary of terms.

 

Get the picture?  This book is beyond exhaustive.  Thus, it is the only field guide or collecting manual of its kind.  And likely, the only one you will ever need.  And, maybe that explains the price.
