Here is a bit of trivia for you. Do you know why it is called a switching power supply?
Well, in the early days of arcade video games, the power supply was what was called an in-line power supply. The result being that in the event of, for example, a shorted circuit within the power supply, the game's printed circuit board could be toasted.
Then, about the time of JAMMA, came an arcade power supply that would immediately switch off in the event of anything that could damage the circuit board. Those possible damaging events are noted below as Protections.
The moral: Always use a switching power supply. And, for classic game owners, replace the outdated original in-line power supply as soon as you can.
Here are some of its many features:
- Green power-on LED.
- +5 VDC adjustment potentiometer.
- Output VDC - +5 @ 16A, -5 @ 1A, +12 @ 4A.
- Input VAC - 110 or 220, selectable by jumper.
- Built-in EMI filter.
- Protections - short circuit, overload, over voltage.
- Safety standards approval - UL 1950, EN60950, CB, CE.
Mounting Hardware: Included with each power supply, you will find the required mounting hardware. The 2 mounting brackets are attached to the power supply, and the 4 mounting screws are provided in a bag.
Wire Terminals: Included with each power supply are 8 pieces of #8 stud 18-22 AWG wire insulated terminals. Use these terminals for attaching the input and output voltage wiring to the power supply.
-5 VDC: Many of today's arcade switching power supply do not provide a -5 VDC output terminal. No problem, if you are providing power to a game circuit board that does not require -5 VDC.
But, many older games do require -5 VDC. Like they say, better to be safe than sorry. So, buy a power supply with -5 VDC and cover all the bases.
Size: Approximate dimensions with mounting brackets attached = 7-1/2" long x 2" wide x 5" high.

- Use the mounting fasteners and wire terminals included.
- Check that the AC input voltage jumper is set correctly - 110 VAC for USA.
- And, while metering the +5 VDC output under load, use the white adjust pot to regulate that the +5 VDC output is correct (typically about +5.05 VDC).
Cooling: While one is rarely needed, if your power supply will be operating for long periods under heavy load in a warm environment, you should direct a small fan unto the power supply.
Heat is the enemy of all electronic components.
